Pictures From Afghanistan

Premiered Glasgow International Film Festival - March 2020

BBC Scotland and Screen Scotland

David Pratt returns to Afghanistan to tell the story of his early photojournalism assignments covering the mujahideen guerrilla war against the Soviet occupation in the 1980s. Smuggled over the border by the resistance, his photographic journey takes him across the Hindu Kush mountains in what would become one of many arduous clandestine trips inside the country to document the war. The film also gives a searing insight into the country’s bitter faction civil war of the 1990s and subsequent rise of the Taliban.

In an emotional return to the former Yugoslavia, David Pratt meets surviving veterans of the battle of Vukovar in 1991. As one of only a handful of journalists along with colleague and old friend Alan Davies to gain access to the town during the siege by the Yugoslav People’s Army and paramilitary forces from Serbia, Pratt’s photographs prove to be an invaluable record of the battle and those that took part. Moving on in a road trip across Bosnia Herzegovina the film takes the viewer through other past battlegrounds, including Tuzla, Sarajevo and Mostar where Pratt relives one of the most traumatic experiences of his photojournalism career before the film culminates in Dubrovnik.
